There is no denying that comic book legend and American icon, Stan Lee will forever remain the most important figure in Marvel Comics history and the entire superhero genre as a whole. With the explosive success of superhero movies in recent years (including Black Panther (2018) made over $1.3 BILLION and the Avengers franchise raking in over $7.6 BILLION in the past five years) Stan Lee’s stock continued to soar in terms of popularity and net-worth. While it is well documented that Stan and the various companies he worked for in the past, separated with varying degrees of amicability, Stan’s legendary status continued to rise meteorically.

Our work both in-house and in the field, led to the elder abuse charges and arrest of the accused subject Morgan.

The Challenge

In late 2017, Toltec was hired by attorneys representing Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment, to initiate an investigation on the subject Keya Morgan. Morgan portrayed himself as Stan Lee’s Business Manager while wielding control of Stan behind the scenes.

At 95, Lee was mourning the death of his wife, Joanie, and was in-and-out of communication with his 67-year-old daughter, J.C., over the subject of his estate, worth an estimated $50 to $70 million.

While Lee traveled across the country and internationally to comic conventions, his health required nursing care at home and on the road. As Lee’s mental and physical health started to decline, Keya Morgan stepped in and became his business manager.

The Solution

Toltec investigators were hired to research the background and current activities of the subject Keya Morgan and also performed surveillance operations to document the care and treatment of Stan, while under the control of subject Morgan.

The Result

The work conducted by Toltec investigators, both in-house and in the field, led to the elder abuse charges and arrest of the accused subject Morgan. Los Angeles County prosecutors say Morgan intentionally exerted influence over Lee to capitalize on his wealth, even though Morgan had technically no authority to act on his behalf.

Additionally, prosecutors stated that Morgan stole more than $262,000 from autograph signings Lee conducted in May 2018. Morgan is facing one felony count of false imprisonment of an elder adult, three felony counts of theft, embezzlement, forgery or fraud against an elder adult and one misdemeanor count of elder abuse, all filed in May 2019, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Superior Court Public Information Office. Morgan’s case is still pending as of December 2020.
